How to install VLC on Fedora Linux

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. Its available for Unix, Linux, Mac OSX and Windows. In this article i ll explain you how to add the VLC repository and how to install it on your machine. We can install it on Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Gentoo, Arch Linux, Slackware Mandriva, ALT Linux and CentOS Linux by using packages or else you can also install it from source.

Before installing any package in your machine , it is advisable to update your repository.

For Fedora 11 (Leonidas), Fedora 12 (Constantine), Fedora 13 (Goddard) and Fedora 14 (Laughlin)

Use RPM Fusion for Fedora 11, Fedora 12, Fedora 13 and Fedora 14 (available for x86, x86_64, ppc and ppc64) and install rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm for F11, F12, F13 and F14.

    $ su -
    # rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
    # yum install vlc
    # yum install mozilla-vlc

For Fedora Rawhide ( The Current Development Version )

Use RPM Fusion for Rawhide (available for x86, x86_64, ppc and ppc64) and install rpmfusion-free-release-rawhide.noarch.rpm

    $ su -
    # rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-rawhide.noarch.rpm
    # yum install vlc
    # yum install mozilla-vlc

For Fedora 8 (Werewolf ) , Fedora 9 (Sulphur), Fedora 10 (Cambridge)

Use RPM Fusion for Fedora 8, Fedora 9 and Fedora 10 (available for x86, x86_64 and ppc) and install rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm

    $ su -
    # rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
    # yum install vlc
    # yum install python-vlc mozilla-vlc

For Fedora 7 (Moonshine)

Use RPM – LIVNA for Fedora 7 (available for x86, x86_64 and ppc) and install livna-release-7.rpm

    $ su -
    # rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm
    # yum install vlc
    # yum install python-vlc mozilla-vlc

For Fedora Core 6

Use RPM – LIVNA for Fedora 7 (available for x86, x86_64 and ppc) and install livna-release-.6rpm

    $ su -
    # rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-6.rpm
    # yum install vlc
    # yum install python-vlc mozilla-vlc

For Feodra core 1,2,3,4,5 you should download and install the appropriate package from FreshRPMs
